Tibetan Children's Village School

Over in P.O Choglamsar, which is in the Leh Ladakh region, is where our school, Tibetan Children's Village School, is located. The landscape around here is quite something, very dry and rocky, but it’s what we call home. We are sitting at 194101, way up high. The school is more like a small community than just a building. We have kids here from all over, and we spend our time making sure they have what they need for the day. It’s a very simple life. We don’t have much in the way of fancy gadgets or modern luxuries. Everything we have has been built up slowly over a long time. The wind can be very strong in the afternoons, blowing dust across the yard. We just pull our coats tighter and keep going. We don’t really do the whole corporate image thing. There are no mission statements on the walls. We just know what needs to be done when we wake up. Making sure everyone is fed, the lessons are taught, and the place is clean takes up most of our energy. It’s a lot of responsibility, but we don’t think about it in a big, dramatic way. It’s just our daily life in Choglamsar. People who visit often say it feels different here, and maybe it does, but to us, it’s just the place where we work and live. We keep things practical and stay focused on the day-to-day.
