Ghoomar Restaurant

Being out here in the Sam Sand Dunes of Jaisalmer is a bit different than running a restaurant in the middle of a town. We are right in the desert, so there is sand everywhere, which I guess is what people come here to see anyway. It’s a long way from the main city area, but the 345001 zip code still covers us out here. Ghoomar Restaurant is mostly about giving people a place to sit down after they have been out looking at the dunes or riding camels. The wind can be quite strong sometimes and it carries the sand, so we are always cleaning things off. It is quiet out here at night, except for when people are talking and eating. We use what we have and try to make it comfortable for anyone who finds their way out to this part of Jaisalmer. It’s not like a regular building you’d see on a city street; it fits in more with the surroundings. We have local people working here who know the desert well. Sometimes the power goes out or the water truck is late, but we manage to keep things going. It's a very basic setup because out in the dunes, you can't really have anything too complex. Most people come here to experience the desert, and we just happen to be the place where they can get a meal while they do it. It stays pretty warm even after the sun goes down.
