Gajis Restaurant

Our place is sitting right on the roof of Gaji Hotel in Jaisalmer. If you walk toward the Kalakar Colony, near where everyone goes to see the Sunset Point, you’ll find the stairs leading up to us. Jaisalmer is a dusty, hot place, but being up on the roof gives you a bit of a breeze sometimes. We see a lot of backpackers and people who have been out in the desert all day. They come up here to sit down and look at the fort or wait for the sun to go down. The furniture is just simple stuff that can handle the sun and the wind. We cook in a small kitchen area that gets incredibly warm, but we are used to it by now. The menu has things we like to eat ourselves, mostly basic stuff that fills you up. We don’t have a fancy elevator, so you have to walk up, but most people don't mind once they see the view. We spend our mornings sweeping away the sand that blows in overnight. It’s a slow pace of life here. We chat with the guests, tell them which markets are overpriced, and keep the cold drinks ready. It’s not a big operation, just a rooftop spot in an old city where you can take a break from the noise of the streets below. We've been here for years, watching the sun set over the desert almost every single evening.
