Sowcarpet is a maze of narrow streets, and Veerappan Street is right in the thick of it. Our shop in the Mahaveer Complex is a small slice of that world. You have to navigate through the crowds and the scooters to find us at 33/8. The complex itself has been around for decades, and it shows in the way the stairs creak and the walls have layers of old paint. Inside our space, it’s a bit of a tight fit. We have counters that wrap around the room and shelves that go all the way to the ceiling. Most of the day is spent handling small items and talking to people who have known our family for generations. There is a sense of history here that you can’t really replicate. We don’t bother with much modern branding or bright lights. Instead, we rely on the same old lamps we’ve always used. The air is always a bit humid, and we keep the door open to catch whatever breeze comes through the hallway. It’s a lot of counting, weighing, and recording everything by hand in thick registers. We know the rhythm of the market, the times when it’s too busy to move and the quiet lulls in the late afternoon. It’s a grounded, busy life, and we are just one small part of the long history of this street.
