Madhu Book Centre

Madhu Book Centre is located in the Shankarappa Building on Road No 1. Avenue Road is always crowded and loud, so it is quite a lively place to have a shop. We have been here at number 79 for a long time. We carry all sorts of books, mostly for school and college kids who live nearby. The shop isn't very wide at all, so we have to use every bit of wall space we have for shelving. There are stacks on the floor sometimes when a new shipment arrives from the printers. It is just a few of us working here. We know the syllabus for the local schools pretty well by now because we see it every year. If a parent comes in asking for a specific textbook, we usually know exactly which one they mean without even looking it up. The building itself is old, but it stays fairly cool inside even when it’s hot out on the street. We don't have fancy air conditioning or any of those bright neon lights you see in malls. It’s just a regular book shop where we try to keep things useful for the neighbors. Some customers have been coming to us since they were in primary school and now they bring their own children. That is just how it goes on this street. We keep the doors open late most days because people finish work and stop by on their way home. It’s a lot of work, but it is our life.
