Sri Bricks

Down on 54, Middle Street in Thiruvedagam, you’ll find us at Sri Bricks. It’s a quiet enough street most of the time, though things pick up when we’re loading a big order. We’ve been here for a good bit, and the neighbors are all used to the sound of the bricks being moved around. It’s a very physical job. You spend a lot of time on your feet, and your hands get rough from the clay and the fire. We don't have a fancy office with computers and leather chairs. It’s more of a desk in the corner of the shed where we keep the logs and some old ledgers. Thiruvedagam is a nice place to live and work. We know most of the people who walk by every day. Sometimes we stop for a chat when things aren’t too busy. The drying racks take up most of our space. We have to watch the weather closely because a sudden downpour can ruin a whole day's work if we aren't quick with the covers. It’s not a complicated business, but it requires a lot of patience. You can't rush the drying or the cooling of the bricks. We just follow the same routine we’ve had for years. It’s steady work, and it keeps us busy from dawn until the sun goes down. We’re just a small part of Middle Street, doing what we know how to do best. It’s just us, the clay, and the fire, day in and day out.
