Hatim Power Bricks

Our yard is out on Sevaihavagai Road in Melur Taluk, at number 23. It’s a bit of a drive from the main town, which is actually nice because we have plenty of space for the machines. We call it Hatim Power Bricks because we use some heavy equipment to get the job done faster than the old manual way. It still takes a lot of sweat, though. The sun out here in Melur doesn't play around, and the heat coming off the kiln makes it even warmer. I spend most of my day making sure the power cycles are right and that nothing is getting stuck. My wife helps out with the paperwork in the small cabin we built near the entrance. It’s a family-run operation through and through. We didn’t go to some business school to learn how to do this; we just learned by doing it every day for years. Sometimes things break down and we have to spend the whole afternoon under a machine with a wrench. That’s just part of the life. We don’t have a big sign or anything. Most people just see the stacks of bricks from the road and pull in to ask about prices. We keep our talk simple and our prices as fair as we can. It’s honest work and it keeps the lights on, so we can’t complain much.
