S.R Home Made Food

Our kitchen is tucked away on Jawahar street in Chinna Chokkikulam. It’s a quiet enough spot, though being near Vadamalayan Hospital means there are always people moving around the neighborhood. We started S.R Home Made Food because we knew how to cook and needed to do something productive with our time. It’s not a big restaurant with waiters and a fancy menu. It’s more about the actual cooking that happens in the back. We spend a lot of time packing up boxes and making sure everything is ready for the people who stop by. Madurai can get very hot, so the kitchen gets quite stuffy in the afternoons, but that’s just part of the job. We buy our ingredients from the local markets around here. Sometimes the vegetables are great, sometimes they’re just okay, but we use what’s available that morning. There’s no big secret to what we do. We just follow the recipes we’ve always used at home. The floors need scrubbing every night and the dishes never seem to end. It’s a lot of manual work and we don’t have any automated machines to help us out. Most of our neighbors know us by now. We don't do much talking while we work because there's always a deadline to meet. When the sun goes down, we finish up the last few orders and head home ourselves. It’s a steady life for us here on Jawahar street.
