Our place is at 235 Maharshi Devendra Road, up on the second floor. If you’ve ever walked down this road in Kolkata, you know it’s packed with people and trucks at almost every hour. The building is one of those older ones with a lot of character and thick walls. We mostly handle spices here, and the smell of turmeric and chili usually sticks to our clothes by the end of the shift. It’s a family-run kind of setup in a way, even if we’ve grown over the years. We spend our mornings checking the latest shipments that come in from the wholesale markets. The second-floor view isn't much, just the tops of vehicles and the busy street life below. We don’t have fancy elevators, so we do a lot of walking up and down those stairs. Sometimes the electricity flickers when the weather gets bad, but we just light a few candles and keep on going. It’s a noisy office because of the traffic outside, but you get used to it after a week or two. We have our regular customers who have been coming to us for decades, and we know most of them by their first names. It’s practical work, nothing too complicated. We just make sure the spice quality is what it should be and that the bags are stitched up tight before they leave the warehouse.
