Marshall House is a crowded building, and being on N.S. Road means we’re right in the middle of all the noise and shouting. Anmol Spices has been operating out of room 663 for a long time. It’s a small space for what we do, and sometimes it feels like the boxes are closing in on us. The stairs are steep, and the elevator is always temperamental, so we end up carrying bags of spices up and down more than we’d like. You can smell the cumin and turmeric before you even reach our door. It gets into your clothes and follows you home. We spend our days answering the phone, writing out slips, and checking the quality of what comes in. It’s mostly paper files and old wooden desks here. No one uses fancy software much; we prefer the old way of doing things. The traffic outside is constant, and sometimes the dust from the road makes everything feel a bit gritty. We have tea twice a day from the stall downstairs, which is the highlight of the afternoon. We aren't a big corporation. We’re just a few people who know spices and work hard to make sure the bags are packed right. It’s a lot of weighing and sealing. It’s tiring on the back, but it’s honest work. We don’t overthink it, we just keep the business moving one day at a time in this busy corner of the city.
