We are based in Shop No.3C on Ganguly Lane. It’s right in the middle of Posta, which everyone knows is always crowded and noisy. Being near the Burrabazar bus stand means there is never a quiet moment. You can hear the conductors shouting all day long while we move sacks of spices around. Baba Masala started small and we just stayed here because this is where the trade happens. The lane is narrow, so getting big deliveries in can be a real headache sometimes. We spend most of our mornings checking the quality of what comes in and making sure the bags are sealed right. Our shelves are usually pretty packed. Sometimes the dust from the street gets in, so we are always cleaning the counters. People from the nearby shops come by for tea and a quick chat about the market rates. It’s not a fancy office or anything like that. It’s just a ground-floor shop with high ceilings and a lot of history in the walls. We don’t have a big marketing team or anything. It is just a few of us making sure the orders go out to the local vendors on time. If you walk past the bus stand, you’ll probably smell the turmeric and chili before you even see our sign. We just keep our heads down and do the work that needs doing every single day.
