In the valley around Sadwan, things are a bit different than the high hills. We have more heat and different crops to worry about. Our group, Nurpur Valley Farmers Producer Company Limited, is based right here in Vpo Sadwan in the Nurpur tehsil. We are a collection of local growers who realized that if we don't look out for each other, nobody else will. Farming in this part of Himachal has its own set of problems, like the wild animals coming into the fields or the unpredictable rains that happen just when you are about to harvest. We share tools and talk about what the market is doing so we don't get cheated. Our office is just a simple place where we keep our records and meet once a week. It isn't very tidy, usually there are bags of grain or some paperwork scattered around. We don't have a big staff, just us farmers taking turns to handle the company business. Most of us have known each other since we were kids in Sadwan. It makes working together easier, even when we disagree on things. We are just trying to keep the farming tradition alive in the valley without going broke. It is honest work and we do it as a team because it is the only way to survive these days. No one is getting rich, but we are making it through. We take things as they come and try to keep our feet on the ground.
