Unr English Medium High School

Our school, Unr English Medium High School, is over in the Bagdogra area of Siliguri. We work with high school students here, teaching them in English because that is what many parents in this part of town want for their children. It is a fairly simple setup with basic classrooms and a staff room for the teachers. Bagdogra is a busy place because of the airport and the main highway nearby, so there is always a lot of activity in the surrounding streets. The school stays a little bit quieter than the main road, though. Most of the kids who come here live within a few kilometers and they either walk or ride their bicycles to get to class. We are not a fancy private school with air conditioning or expensive equipment; we just have regular fans and the breeze when the windows are open. The teachers focus on going through the textbooks and making sure the students are prepared for their board exams. It is a lot of hard work for the teenagers, especially in the higher grades, but they seem to manage it okay. We have a mix of kids from different backgrounds in our rooms, and everyone usually gets along well. We try to keep the building tidy and the atmosphere calm so that real learning can happen. It is just a decent, honest school doing its part for the local kids in Bagdogra.
