We have been running Arpan Tent House here in South Delhi for quite a while now. Most people around the neighborhood know us because we’re always out and about, setting up poles and heavy fabric for different kinds of functions. It gets really busy for us, especially during the peak wedding season or when there’s a big local festival happening in the streets. We spend most of our days loading up the old trucks and making sure every single pole and sheet gets to the site on time. It is honestly hard work, mostly because the weather here in Delhi can be so unpredictable and harsh. One day it is boiling hot and the next it is pouring rain, but the tents have to go up regardless of what the sky looks like. We have got all sorts of stuff stored away in our shed, like those heavy metal frames, colorful drapes that have seen better days, and stacks of plastic chairs that still do the job just fine. My cousin helps me out with most of the heavy lifting and we usually hire a few extra local hands when there is a big party to handle. Dealing with the crazy traffic in South Delhi is probably the most frustrating part of our entire job. Sometimes it takes us over an hour just to move a few blocks with all the gear. We just try to keep things moving and make sure people have a place to sit and some shade over their heads.
