We are up on the first floor of the Old G & H High School building on East Jail Road. If you know Ranchi at all, you’ll know that East Jail Road is a busy place with a lot of history. The building we are in is quite old and has high ceilings, which helps when it gets hot in the summer. Being on the first floor means we get a bit of a breeze if we leave the windows open. We’ve set up our rooms for teaching and it’s usually pretty packed in the evenings when people finish work or other classes. The stairs are a bit narrow and people have to watch their step. We spend a lot of our time looking at textbooks and marking papers. It’s a very practical environment; we don’t have fancy carpets or anything like that. Just desks, chairs, and plenty of pens. There’s a tea stall right outside the main gate where we usually go when we need a break. Ranchi can be a bit rainy, and when it pours, the sound on the roof is so loud we have to shout a bit to be heard. We’ve been here long enough that we know all the local rickshaw drivers who wait nearby. It’s a solid, straightforward place for learning and we don't try to be anything else. The walls could use a new coat of paint, but they hold up fine.
