Sunderban Tiger Camp is way out in Dayapur, in the Gosaba area of the South 24 Parganas. It is a long way from the city, and that is exactly why people come here. We are surrounded by water and mangroves. The life here is very different from what you see in Kolkata. Most of the people who work here are from the nearby villages. We know these woods and the tides better than anyone else. It is not a place with shiny glass walls or air-conditioned hallways everywhere. It is more about the trees and the river. We spend a lot of time maintaining the grounds because the weather can be tough on buildings out here near the water. Sometimes the electricity is a bit spotty, but we have generators to keep things going when needed. We serve local food, mostly things you would find in a typical Bengali home in this region. Guests come to see the forest, and we just provide a place for them to sleep and eat while they explore. It is a very quiet life until the boat engines start in the morning. We don't try to make it look like a city resort. It is a camp, plain and simple. We take pride in knowing the local geography and being able to show people a bit of the Sunderbans without any fuss. It’s a lot of hard work but we like it.
