Kavery Primary School

Kavery Primary School is situated at 59, Elliot Road in the Park Street area. It is an old part of the city, and our building fits right in with its weathered walls and heavy wooden doors. As a primary school, we deal with younger kids, so there is always a lot of movement. The classrooms are simple with rows of small desks. We have a few cupboards where we store the textbooks and the attendance sheets. Elliot Road is quite narrow, and when it rains, the water tends to pool up near the entrance, so we have to be careful. Inside, the fans hum constantly to deal with the Kolkata humidity. We don’t have fancy computers or a big playground. The kids usually play in the corridors or the small space we have out front. Most of the teachers have lived in this area for a long time, so they know all the families. It feels more like a small neighborhood gathering than a big institution. We spend a lot of time on reading and writing basics. The morning assembly is held in the main hall, and then everyone goes to their rooms. We try to keep things organized, but with thirty kids in a room, it is never perfect. It’s just a plain, local primary school doing its best to teach the children from around Park Street and Elliot Road every day. We just take it one day at a time.
