Hajus Darbar Restaurant

We are located at P 15 on Bentick Street, right in the middle of all the chaos of central Calcutta. It’s near Commerce House, so there are always office people and shoppers walking past. This part of the city never really stops. We opened up here because it’s a good spot for anyone needing a break from the heat outside. The restaurant isn't anything like those modern cafes you see opening up now. It’s more traditional, with chairs that have seen a lot of years. We serve a lot of different things, mostly stuff that fills you up for the afternoon. The staff has been with us for a while, and they know the regulars by name. Sometimes the service is a bit slow when the lunch rush hits all at once, but we do what we can. Bentick Street is narrow and loud, so once you step inside, it feels a bit quieter, though you can still hear the trams and horns. We don't have a big menu with fancy names. It’s just straightforward food. We check the market every morning for what we need. It’s a lot of work keeping a place going in GPO area, but we like being part of the history here. If you're looking for somewhere with white tablecloths, this probably isn't it. We are just a local spot for a decent meal while you're out in the city. We try to keep the water jars full and the tables wiped down as much as possible.
