Hiralal Hair Cutting Saloon is located in Gosala Bazar, right on Station Road in the Maligaon Chariali area of Guwahati. If you know the station, you know where we are. It’s a crowded part of town and the shop is right in the middle of all that activity. We have been cutting hair here for many years. It is a simple business. We open early because the people catching trains often want a quick shave before they head out. The shop has the usual smell of talcum powder and aftershave. We have three chairs, though usually only two are working at the same time. The walls are painted a light blue that has faded over the years. We have a small radio that plays the local stations, providing some background noise against the honking of the cars outside. It’s a place where neighbors meet and catch up on things. We don't do anything modern or stylish, just the regular cuts people have been getting for decades. The floor is concrete and we sweep it every hour, but the hair always finds a way into the corners. We use a lot of water from the bucket because the tap can be slow. It’s just how we do things here. It's a steady life, meeting different people every day and making sure they look a bit tidier than when they walked in.
