Our spot here in Barmana is right in the middle of the Gagal Cement Works area. If you’ve ever driven through Bilaspur in Himachal, you know the winding roads and the dust that comes with the industry. I’m writing this from the office in the Trt B12/3 quarters. It’s a bit of a climb to get up here, but the air is different than in the plains. Most of us live right here in the colony, so work and home kind of blend together after a while. Vijay Kumar Khatik and the rest of the team have been around these hills for quite some time. The plant is a huge part of the landscape here, and you can hear the machinery humming in the background most days. Winters get pretty cold, so we usually have a heater going and plenty of chai to keep us moving. It’s not the kind of office where people wear suits; it’s more about boots and jackets because of the environment. The buildings are old-school, built back when the plant first started, so they have that sturdy, heavy feel to them. We don’t have much in the way of entertainment nearby, just the local shops and the canteen. It’s a quiet life in the mountains, centered around the cement works. We just focus on our tasks and try to keep things organized despite the dusty surroundings. It’s a long way from the big cities, but we like the pace here.
