About Maa Chamunda Arts And Craft – Art & Craft in Udaipur
We set up Maa Chamunda Arts And Craft here in Pratappura because it’s where we live. Being near Bedla Mataji makes it easy for people to find us when they’re out this way. We spend most of our days carving or painting. It’s slow work and your back starts to ache after a few hours of sitting on the floor. We make things out of wood and stone and whatever else we can get our hands on. Some days it’s just small statues, other days we’re working on bigger pieces for someone's home. The workshop is usually a mess of chips and dust. We don't have a big sign or anything. People just know we are here. My uncle started this a long time ago and taught us how to hold the tools right. It takes a lot of patience to get the details looking okay. Sometimes a piece of wood cracks right at the end and you have to start all over again. That's the frustrating part of the job. But when a piece comes out right, it feels good. We sell to locals and sometimes people passing through the area stop in. We don't do much advertising. The work speaks for itself, I guess. It’s a quiet life here in this part of town, just doing the work we know how to do, even if the money isn't always great.
