At 164, Bhatiyani Chohata, right on the way to the City Palace, you'll find Orient Craft House. It’s a narrow building like many of the others on this road and it’s packed from floor to ceiling. We have a lot of different things piled up and sometimes it takes a bit of digging to find what someone is looking for. The stairs are a bit steep and narrow so we’re always careful when we’re carrying boxes up and down. We’ve been here for quite some time now and the neighborhood has changed a lot around us but the shop stays mostly the same. The street is always loud with the sounds of people and vehicles but inside it’s a bit more peaceful once you get past the front door. We usually have a pot of tea going in the back for whoever stops by to talk. Most of our day is spent checking the inventory or cleaning the items on the lower shelves where the street dust settles. It’s not a very complicated business but it keeps us on our feet. My father still comes in most days to sit in his favorite chair and watch the street. We close up when the tourist traffic starts to thin out in the evening. It’s a steady kind of life and we’re used to the rhythm of this busy part of the city.
