You can find K J Handicrafts at 490 Amal Ka Kanta, right opposite the Chandpole Bajarang Marg. This is deep in the heart of the old city. The lanes are narrow, and you have to be careful with the cows and scooters passing by. Our shop is a bit cramped because we have so many things crammed in. We’ve got piles of handicrafts everywhere you look. It’s a bit of a maze inside. We spend a lot of time dusting and rearranging the stock. The building is old, like most things around Chandpole. It has a certain smell to it—a mix of old wood and incense from the temple nearby. We usually have some music playing quietly in the background. Our neighbors have been here as long as we have, so we often share a pot of tea in the afternoon. It’s not a fancy showroom. It’s a workspace where we also sell what we have. Customers have to watch their step as they come in. We do a lot of our own packing for people who want to send things home. It’s a lot of bubble wrap and tape. The evenings are the busiest time on Bajarang Marg. The lights come on and the whole street feels different. We stay open until fairly late. It’s just a normal, busy life in a traditional part of the city.
