We are located in the Madhi area of Surat, right on Bazar Street. If you know where Ranchhoddas Bhaichand is, we are pretty close to that spot. The street is always full of activity, with trucks bringing in goods and people moving heavy bags around. It can get quite loud with all the shouting and the engines running. Our place is basically a warehouse and a small office area tucked into one side. There is a lot of dust from the pulses and the sacks, so we are always sweeping the floor. It’s not the cleanest looking place, but it’s a working market, so that’s expected. We spend our days checking the quality of what comes in and making sure the orders are ready to go out. The ceiling is high and it keeps it relatively cool even when the Surat heat gets bad in the summer. We’ve got a couple of ceiling fans that help a bit. Most of the people working here have been with us for a long time. We drink tea from the stall down the street a few times a day. It’s a very traditional way of doing business, just face-to-face and lots of physical work. There are no fancy computers or high-tech systems, just some ledgers and the scales for weighing the bags. It’s just how things have always been done on Bazar Street and we don’t see any reason to change it.
