People usually find us because they are heading toward the Purana Shiv Mandir here in Shahpur Jat. We are at number 132, just a small spot that’s been around for a while now. Most mornings start early, getting the betel leaves ready and making sure the containers are filled with all the usual stuff like gulkand and nuts. It’s not a fancy place, just a regular counter where people stop by after their lunch or when they are walking through the lanes. Shahpur Jat has changed a lot with all the designer shops coming in, but our corner stays pretty much the same. We see the same faces every day, mostly guys working nearby or people living in the old houses around the temple. Sometimes it gets crowded in the evenings when everyone is out for a walk. We don’t really do anything complicated, just the standard sweet pan or whatever someone asks for. It’s a lot of standing around and talking to neighbors while we work. The bells from the temple ring throughout the day and it just feels like home. We’ve had the same wooden shelves for years and they hold everything we need. If you are looking for us, just ask anyone near the Mandir. Most people know where Nandalal sits. It’s a simple life, just rolling pans and keeping the shop tidy enough to work in every day.
