Food Lovers Spice

Food Lovers Spice is tucked away in the Camp area on D P Road. If you walk past, you can usually smell the dried chilies and the turmeric before you even see the sign. The shop is filled with big sacks of grain and spices that we have to move around every morning to make space for customers to stand. It is a narrow place and if three people come in at once, it feels very crowded. We spend a lot of time weighing out powders into small plastic bags and tying them with red string. The wooden shelves are stacked high with jars of different seeds and pods that we get from the wholesale market. Most of the people who come here live in the neighborhood and they know exactly what they want, so there isn't much talking except for the price. The floor is made of old stone and the light comes in through the front door which we keep open all day. Sometimes the wind blows the dust from D P Road inside and we have to wipe everything down again. We have a small desk in the back where the ledgers are kept, and that is where the paperwork gets done when things are quiet in the afternoon. It is a lot of heavy lifting and dusty hands, but it is the work we do. We don't change things around much because the regulars like knowing exactly where the cinnamon is.
