Our shop, Bansali Spices, sits right at the Singanpor Char Rasta in the Warje area. We are at number 346, and you can usually smell the place before you see it because of the strong scents. We spend our days measuring out powders and seeds for people who come in for their weekly supplies. It is a small space, filled mostly with big bags and glass jars stacked high. We have been doing this for many years, and the shelves are a bit worn down and dusty now. Every morning we open up the heavy shutters and start setting out the bins for the customers. The dust from the ground chili and turmeric gets everywhere, so we are always sneezing a bit by noon. It is just the way it goes when you work with spices all day long. Most of our customers are neighbors who have been buying from us since we first opened the doors. We don't have a website or anything like that, just the counter and the old scale we use. Sometimes the traffic at the Char Rasta gets really loud and distracting, but we are used to the noise by now. We try to keep the stock fresh, so we are always moving things around in the back. It is a simple business, really. We just sell what people need for their daily cooking at home. Sometimes we chat with the regulars about their families while we weigh out some cumin.
