Our shop is located in Kalbadevi, which is probably one of the busiest parts of the city. We are on the fourth floor at 27/29 Kalbadevi R C Dutt Road. Being next to Gayatri Medicals helps people find us, otherwise, they might just walk right past the entrance. It’s an old building, the kind where the walls have a lot of history and the hallways are a bit narrow. Up here on the fourth floor, it stays a bit cooler than the street level. We have stacks of handlooms and various handicrafts piled up almost to the ceiling in some corners. It’s not the most organized place, but we know exactly where the specific cottons or the carved items are kept. Working with textiles means there is always a bit of lint in the air and the colorful patterns are everywhere you look. We spend a lot of time talking to the people who make these things and then trying to find space for the new stock that arrives. Kalbadevi is a place where everyone is in a hurry, but we try to take our time a bit more. We’ve been here long enough that we don’t mind the climb up the stairs or the constant noise from the street vendors below. It’s a messy, honest business. We just enjoy the textures and the work that goes into making these traditional items. There is something nice about being surrounded by things made by hand.
