Kolbhat Lane is a narrow little place off Kalbadevi Road, and it’s always packed with people and goods being moved around. It can be quite a struggle to get up here, especially when you’re carrying a heavy roll of fabric. Our space is filled with handloom textiles and various handcrafted items. The air smells of cotton and sometimes the incense from the shop next door. We don't have any modern decor. It’s just shelves upon shelves of fabric and a few old wooden chairs for when we need to sit. We spend our days unfolding and folding things, or checking for any flaws in the weave. It’s a lot of work on the eyes and the back. We don't have a big corporate structure. It’s just a few of us who have been doing this for a long time. We know our fabrics well. We usually have a radio playing in the background to keep us company. Kalbadevi Road is always bustling, and the noise never really stops. We’ve gotten used to the rhythm of the place. We don't have a website or do any social media. We just wait for people to find us in our little corner of the city. It’s been working for us so far.
