Working at M.M. Poonjiaji Spices Ltd. means your clothes always smell like cumin or turmeric by the end of the day. We are located at 42, Anandilal Podar Marg, right near 1St Marine Street. It’s a busy corner of New Marine Lines, so there is always a lot of noise coming from the street outside. The building itself has been around for a bit, and you can feel it in the creaky floors and the way the walls look. We spend our hours grinding, mixing, and packing all sorts of spices. It gets pretty dusty in the packing room, so we all wear those little masks, but you still taste the pepper in the air. The trucks have a hard time navigating the narrow bits of Anandilal Podar Marg, so there’s always someone shouting directions or moving a van. We don’t have a fancy corporate lobby; it’s mostly just sacks of raw ingredients and finished boxes waiting to go out. It’s a bit chaotic during the middle of the day when everyone is trying to get orders filled. We just keep our heads down and handle the spice blends. It’s a lot of heavy lifting and making sure the scales are balanced right.
