About Tisser Rural Handicrafts – Art & Craft in Mumbai
You have to go down to the basement of Murshid House to find us. We’re right at Mazgaon Junction, opposite the Green Fields Restaurant. Being in a basement means it stays a bit cooler, which is nice during the summer on Kanakapura Road. We handle a lot of rural handicrafts here. The space is usually overflowing with boxes of textiles, wood carvings, and pottery. It’s a bit of a maze sometimes. We aren't a high-end boutique with perfect lighting. It feels more like a warehouse where things are actually happening. We spend our days unpacking shipments from different villages and checking the quality of the items. It’s a lot of manual work, lifting crates and wrapping things carefully. The restaurant across the street is where we usually grab a quick bite. Mazgaon is a busy junction, so there's always a hum of traffic in the background. We don't have a big sign out front, so you have to look for Murshid House specifically. We like the tactile nature of what we do. Touching the fabrics and seeing the handiwork makes the long hours worth it. We aren't trying to be a corporate giant. We just like these things and want to get them to people who appreciate them. It’s a simple, cluttered, and busy life down here in the basement, but we wouldn't have it any other way most days.
