Heeramaneck & Son

You can find us at the Ready Money Building, which is right behind Regal Cinema on Battery Street. Colaba is a place where everything is always changing, but our shop feels like it's stuck in another time. Heeramaneck & Son has been here since my grandfather’s days. The ceiling is high and the floor is that old stone that stays cold even in May. We get a lot of tourists walking past on their way to the Gateway, but most of our actual visitors are locals who live in the old buildings nearby. Battery Street is a bit narrower than the main road, so it’s slightly quieter, though you still hear the taxis honking all the time. We have some old glass cases that we’ve had forever. They’re a bit scratched up now, but they hold the history of the place. We mostly just sit and work on whatever people bring in. It could be a clock that stopped forty years ago or just something simple like a battery change. There’s no rush here. We take our time because that’s what this kind of work needs. Sometimes we sit on the steps outside during lunch just to watch the people go by. It’s a nice enough spot. The post office is close, so we see the mailman every day. We don’t do much advertising; people just seem to know we’re back here behind the cinema. It’s just how things are for us and our family.
