We are situated at 786 on the 1st floor in the Fort area. Fort is full of these old stone buildings with high ceilings and wide staircases. Gopal Times is up one flight of stairs, so you have to look for the sign near the entrance on the ground floor. The shop feels a bit like a step back in time because of the old architecture and the quietness. Large wooden cabinets with glass fronts hold our watches and clocks. Sometimes the floorboards creak when you walk on them, which is common for these old places. Since the shop is on the first floor, a bit of a view of the street below is visible, which is always packed with office workers and taxis. Winding up the mechanical clocks hanging around takes up a lot of time. It’s a relatively quiet place compared to the noise at the street level, which we appreciate. Morning light comes in through the tall windows, making it easy to see the tiny small parts we work with at the bench. A couple of old chairs are available for anyone who wants to sit while they wait for a repair. The walls are painted a pale color that has faded over the years. No special marketing is done here; people just know we are here by word of mouth. Most of our day is spent at the desk with a magnifying glass. It’s a slow-paced environment in a very fast part of the city.
