Bhagirath Arts is tucked away in the Prakash Borade Chawl on Infantry Road in Malad East. If you know the Hanuman area, you know it’s a tight squeeze with a lot of people living and working close together. It’s a lively place, though. There is always the sound of kids playing or someone’s radio going in the background. We do our art work right here. It’s not a big studio like you might see in the movies. It’s just a small space where we can focus on what we’re making. Sometimes the light isn't the best, so we have to move things closer to the door. We’ve lived in this chawl for a long time, so everyone knows what we do. People from Malad East stop by to see what’s new or to ask us to make something specific. It gets pretty cramped when we have a lot of materials laying around. The walk up from the main road can be a bit of a trek, especially during the monsoon when everything is damp. We just keep our heads down and do the work. It’s a humble setup, but it’s ours. We don’t spend much on advertising because the neighbors talk, and that’s usually enough. Being near the Hanuman temple area means there’s always something happening, which keeps things interesting. It’s just a normal life, making things with our hands here in Malad.
