Ashok Watch Co is a small spot over in Chembur, not too far from where the old police station used to be. Most people use that as a landmark when they are looking for us for the first time. The shop is at number 3, and it’s a pretty simple setup. I spend a lot of my time cleaning glass and making sure the displays don't get too dusty, though it’s a losing battle with the street right there. We get a lot of people coming in on their way home from work. They’ll drop off a watch because the glass is cracked or it just stopped working for no reason they can see. I usually tell them to come back in a couple of days. I like to take my time with the repairs so I don't mess anything up. The lighting in here isn't the best, so I have a big lamp right over my desk. Sometimes I think I could fix these things with my eyes closed after all these years. Chembur has changed, and it feels a lot busier than when I first started out here. Still, people always need to know what time it is, so we stay busy enough. There’s something nice about the sound of twenty different clocks all ticking at the same time in the afternoon. It’s a quiet kind of job, and it suits me just fine.
