Gournet Restaurant

We are located at No 92 A, which is part of the North Gate Hotel in Madurai. If you know the Goripalayam area, we are right near G Tex and just opposite American College. It’s a very lively part of town to be in. There are always students walking around from the college and people heading towards the hospital or the temple area. Madurai is famous for being a city that never sleeps, and it definitely feels like that here too. The sun can be really harsh in the afternoons, so people often duck into our place to get away from the heat for a bit. We spend a lot of time in the kitchen prepping for the lunch crowd. It gets quite loud with all the pans clanking and people talking. We don't really go for any of those modern looks; it's just a functional space with tables and chairs. Some of the staff live nearby, so they just walk to work every morning. We’ve seen a lot of changes in the Goripalayam area over the years, but our corner stays mostly the same. Sometimes the college kids come in groups and stay for a while just chatting about their classes. We don't mind as long as there’s space for others. It’s a simple setup we’ve got going. We just make sure the water is cold and the food is ready when the bell rings. It’s just a normal day-to-day life for us here in Madurai.
