Banaprabha Producer Company Limited is based over at 115, Mekada in Bandhugaon. If you know the Koraput area, you know how it is here. The hills are everywhere and the weather can change in a minute. We are just a group of local folks who decided to work together instead of trying to handle everything on our own. It’s not like we have a fancy building with glass walls. Our office in Bandhugaon is a simple place where we keep our tools and some records. Most days, you’ll find one or two of us sitting there talking about the harvest or the price of supplies. We started this because the individual farmers in Mekada were having a hard time getting a fair shake. Now, we pool what we have. It’s a lot of work and sometimes things don’t go as planned. Last season the rain was late and everyone was worried, but we sat down and figured it out. We don’t have a big marketing department or anything. It’s just us, some paper ledgers, and a lot of knowledge about the soil in this part of India. People stop by to drop off their crops or just to drink some water and chat. We know everyone’s name and whose kids are in school. It’s a community thing more than a big business. We just want to keep the farms going and make sure there’s enough for everyone at the end of the year.
