If you head out to Panchagharia village, you’ll find us there. We are based at Uchman Miya’s place, near the Sadhanpur post office in North 24 Parganas. It’s a bit of a trek from the main Kolkata city, but we like it out here because it’s a bit more peaceful. We do fashion work, mostly focused on making garments that people can actually wear every day. Our workshop is just a plain room with rows of machines and a big table for cutting the cloth. It’s very much a local village business. Most of the people who work with us live just a few minutes away, so we all walk or cycle to work. We don't have a lot of fancy equipment, just the stuff that works and gets the job done. Sometimes we sit outside under the trees when we take our lunch break. The work can be repetitive, sewing the same seams over and over, but we try to keep it interesting by chatting while we work. We aren't trying to be a global brand or anything like that. We just want to make sure the clothes we finish are decent enough for the market. It’s a straightforward way of living, really. Just making things by hand and keeping the business going in our little corner of West Bengal, 743221. It’s a quiet life but we stay busy with the stitching every morning.
