Alcan Fashion has its shop at No. 196 Motilal Gupta Road, right in the Behala Siriti Muchipara area. It’s a very busy road, and we’re right in the middle of all the noise and people. Most of our days are spent at the cutting tables or behind the sewing machines. We handle all kinds of fabrics and styles, so there are always scraps of cloth and threads on the floor. It’s not a showroom where everything is perfect; it’s a working shop where clothes actually get made. We have stacks of fabric rolls leaning against the walls and finished garments hanging wherever there’s space. The work can be tiring on the eyes, especially when we’re doing detailed stitching late in the day. Muchipara is a great neighborhood, and we have a lot of regulars who just pop in to see what we are working on. We don’t use any fancy sales talk; we just show people what we’ve made and let them decide. Sometimes the machines act up or we run out of a specific color of thread, and we have to scramble to get it sorted. The monsoon season is a bit of a hassle because the road outside gets flooded, but we stay dry inside and keep working. It’s a small, family-style operation and we just try to do a decent job with every piece we finish. Every day is a bit different depending on the orders we get and how much fabric arrives.
