Sonali Saree Palace

We are located at No. 14/A Dr. Suresh Chandra Baneerjee Road here in Kolkata. The shop is a simple place where we keep our stacks of sarees. It is usually quite humid outside, so we keep the ceiling fans going all day long. My uncle used to sit near the front door, but now I handle most of the daily work. We open the shutters around ten in the morning and stay until the street lights come on in the evening. There is a lot of dust that comes in from the road because it is a busy area, so we are always dusting the glass counters. The sarees are piled up on the shelves, and sometimes they get a bit messy when customers want to see many different colors at once. We don't have any fancy air conditioning or bright spotlights. It is just a normal shop where people from the neighborhood come to buy something for a wedding or just for wearing at home. Sometimes the tea seller from across the street brings us a few cups in the afternoon. We know most of the people who walk past our door. If it rains hard, the water sometimes splashes near the entrance, so we have to move the racks back. It is a plain way of doing business, but it has worked for us for a long time. We just try to keep things moving and make sure the shelves stay full.
