Our shop is located at 50 Sir Hari Ram Goenka Street, right in the middle of all the bustle. Shree Sarees Kolkata has been around this area for quite some time now. If you've ever walked down this street, you know how crowded and lively it gets with people and rickshaws. We have stacks of sarees everywhere you look. It's not the most organized place in the world, but we know where everything is. People come in looking for something specific, and we start pulling things off the shelves. Sometimes the floor gets covered in fabric when it's a busy afternoon. It’s a family-run kind of thing, so there’s always someone around who knows the history of the different weaves. We don’t have those fancy air-conditioned showrooms you see in the big malls. It’s just a regular shop with old wooden counters and fans humming overhead. Customers sit on the stools and talk while they look at the patterns. We see a lot of regulars who have been coming to us for years, maybe even generations. The street outside is always noisy with carts and people, but inside we just focus on the cloth. Every piece of fabric has a different feel to it. We try to keep a good variety so there's something for everyone who walks in. It’s hard work, especially during the festival seasons when the heat is high, but this is what we do. We just keep the doors open and wait for the next person to come in and find what they need.
