Running a business on Jamunalal Bajaj Street means you are right in the thick of it. At Shree Sarees Creation Private Limited, we are located on the second floor of 160. If you know this part of Kolkata, you know how crowded the lanes get. There are handcarts and people everywhere from dawn till dusk. Our office is up a narrow set of stairs that can be a bit of a climb if you aren't used to it. Inside, it’s mostly stacks of fabric and notebooks filled with orders. We’ve got a few old desks and some chairs that have seen better days, but they serve their purpose. It’s loud outside with all the shouting and horns, but once you close the door, it’s just the sound of the ceiling fan and the rustle of cloth. We spend most of our time checking shipments or talking to the weavers who come in from out of town. The heat in the afternoon can be something else, so we drink a lot of water and keep the windows open, even if it brings in the dust. It’s a messy, busy way to work, but it’s how things have always been done around here. We don't do much marketing or anything like that. People just know where we are, and we keep moving through the day one stack at a time. It's not a glamorous life, but it keeps us busy and the bills paid.
