You can find us right in the heart of Kolkata on Bentinck Street. We are on the mezzanine floor of Taher Mansion, which is house number 8. If you know the building, you know it’s one of those older structures with a lot of character. Being on the mezzanine floor means the ceilings are a bit low and the stairs are kind of steep, but we’ve made the space work for us. We do couture work, which is basically a fancy way of saying we make high-end clothes. But inside, it’s just a regular workspace with scraps of silk and cotton everywhere. We spend a lot of time doing hand-work, things like embroidery and fine stitching that you can’t really do with a machine. The street outside is always incredibly loud with horns and people shouting, but once you come up the stairs to our floor, it’s a bit quieter. We spend our days mostly bent over tables with needles in our hands. It’s hard on the eyes after a few hours, so we take plenty of breaks for tea and snacks from the street vendors below. We don’t have a big fancy storefront. People usually hear about us from their friends and then they have to find their way up the stairs to see what we are making. It's a small, busy team here just trying to get the details right on every piece.
