You can find us over at Jothbhim, which is situated right near the Kolkata Leather Complex. It is a bit of a drive out to this part of the city, but it is where we do all our fashion work. Rajsekhar Mondal’s place is easy to spot once you get past the main Hatgacha post office area. The air out here is a little different than the middle of Kolkata. We have been working out of this spot for a while now. The building is simple and we use most of the space for storing fabric rolls and setting up our long work tables. It is not a glamorous fashion house like the ones you see on television. It is mostly just us sitting around, figuring out patterns and making sure the sizes are right for the day. We spend a lot of time on our feet. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to wait a bit for it to come back, but that is just how it is in this area. We have a small team of people who come in from the nearby villages. Everyone knows their job well. We don’t talk much while we are working because we have to focus on the needles and the thread. The floors are usually covered in bits of paper and colorful string. It is a bit of a mess by the end of the day, but we clean it up and start again the next morning. It is honest work.
