Samridhya Garments

Our place, Samridhya Garments, is at 104 B. T. Road, near Ponbonhooghly. It’s a big, noisy road with plenty of buses and trucks going by all the time. We work with clothes and fabrics. If you come inside, you’ll see piles of material and a few sewing machines going. It’s not like those fancy boutiques you see in malls. We’re more of a production unit. We deal with a lot of different patterns and sizes. Sometimes the floor is covered in thread and scraps of cloth that we haven't swept up yet. I’ve been working on B. T. Road for years. You get used to the sound of the traffic after a while. Most of the people working here are from the local area. We all know each other’s families and what’s going on in the neighborhood. It’s a lot of sitting and focusing on the details of the stitching. My eyes get tired by the end of the shift, especially under the fluorescent lights. We don't really have a big sign outside, just enough for people to find the door. We don't do fashion shows or anything like that. We just make the garments and send them off to the buyers. It’s steady work. We’ve had the same machines for a long time, and they still run okay if we oil them regularly. It’s just a normal business trying to keep things moving in a busy part of town. We just do the work and finish the orders.
