Om Shanti Garments

Om Shanti Garments is tucked away on the 4th Floor of No. 10 Tarachand Dutta Street in Burrabazar. If you know anything about Burrabazar, you know how crowded and busy it is. We are way up on the 4th floor, so it’s a bit of a climb, but that’s where we keep all our garments. Tarachand Dutta Street is one of those narrow lanes where there’s always someone moving a cart or carrying a heavy load on their head. Our space is filled to the ceiling with bags and boxes of clothes. It’s not the kind of place where you’ll find fancy decorations. It’s a working space, through and through. I spend most of my day navigating the stacks of fabric and answering the phone. The air up on the 4th floor is a bit quieter than the street level, but you can still hear the shouting and the horns from down below. We’ve been in Burrabazar for quite a while, and you just get used to the tight spaces and the constant movement of goods. Managing the inventory is a big job because we have so many different items squeezed into this one floor. Sometimes the elevator in the building doesn't work, which makes things interesting when we have to move stock. It’s a tough, busy life in this part of town, but we just keep at it, day after day, in our little corner of Tarachand Dutta Street.
