Nazakat Fashions

You have to walk up to the second floor at 164 A Bakul Bagan Road to find us. Bhavani Pur is a busy part of town, and our building is right in the middle of all that noise. The stairs are a bit narrow, so it’s always a bit of a squeeze when someone is coming down while you are going up. Inside the shop, there are heaps of fabric everywhere. We have rolls of cotton, some silks, and a lot of loose threads scattered across the floor. The sound of the sewing machines is pretty constant throughout the day, mixed with the sound of scissors cutting through heavy cloth. We have a few big tables where the cutting happens, and the light comes in through some old windows that look out over the street below. It gets quite warm in the afternoon when the sun hits the glass, so we keep the fans running at full speed. Sometimes a customer comes in with a very specific idea, and we spend a long time looking through the scraps to find the right match. It isn’t the most organized place in the world, with pins stuck in cushions and tape measures draped over chairs, but we know where everything is. We just keep busy with the needles and the fabric while the neighborhood goes about its business outside. There is a big mirror in the corner for fittings, though the frame is getting loose. Nazakat Fashions is just our small way of keeping the local tradition of tailoring alive.
