About Madura Garments – Fashion & Trends in Kolkata
We've been at Jodhpur Park for a while now, up here in Flat 4A of the building at 325. It is a bit of a quiet spot, not like the big malls or the noisy main roads you find in other parts of Kolkata. We deal with clothes and stitching mostly. It gets really busy during the festival seasons, but usually, it's just us working through the piles of fabric and thread. My uncle started this work years ago. He liked being in a residential area because the neighbors are friendly and they just drop by to check on their orders whenever they are out for a walk. We don't have a big fancy sign outside the gate. You just have to know where to find us inside the apartment block. Sometimes the lift acts up, so we end up walking the stairs quite a bit. It is a lot of manual work, measuring things out and making sure the threads match the cloth exactly. We keep the windows open when it is not too hot outside. Kolkata weather can be pretty tough on the sewing machines. Dust gets everywhere. We spend half the morning just cleaning the tables and the floors before we can even start the day. It isn't anything glamorous. Just a workspace with old machines and boxes of buttons. We’ve stayed here because it’s home and the rent is fair. Usually, the tea guy comes around eleven and we take a short break then. It works for us.
