I have been working from Bysack Street for a while now. Jyoti Chandak is the name on the door, though most people just walk in and start talking before looking at any signs. This part of Kolkata is always moving. You can hear the rickshaws and the shouting from the market all day long. It is 4, Bysack Street, right in the thick of it. The office isn't much to look at. We have got a couple of old desks and a fan that makes a bit too much noise when it is on high. It gets very hot in the afternoons, especially in the summer, but that is just how things are here. I spend most of my time answering the phone or looking through files that seem to pile up no matter how much I clean. People often drop by without calling first, which is fine, but it makes the days feel long. We do not have fancy coffee machines or anything like that. Usually, I just send someone down to the corner stall for a paper cup of tea. It is a simple way of doing things. No one here is wearing a suit unless they absolutely have to for a meeting elsewhere. Most of the time, it is just about getting through the list of tasks for the day and making sure nothing gets lost in the shuffle. It is just a local spot where work happens every day and we try to keep our heads above water.
