Upward English

Upward English is based in Jhikli Barol, right on the Main Road in Dari. Dharamshala is a beautiful place but finding a good spot to sit down and focus on language can be tricky. We set this up to give locals and people passing through a place to work on their English skills. It’s a plain building, nothing that stands out too much from the other shops on the road. Inside, we have some desks and chairs where we go over lessons. It’s mostly adults who come in, maybe looking to improve their chances for a job or just wanting to understand movies better. We don't use a lot of high-tech stuff. Most of it is just paper, pens, and talking to each other. The atmosphere is pretty relaxed. Sometimes we have tea while we work. It’s a bit of a climb to get here if you're walking from the lower parts of town, but the view is decent. We’ve been here for a while now, so the neighbors know us. We aren't trying to be a massive university or anything. It's just a local spot for learning. Sometimes the rain gets loud on the roof and we have to speak up. It’s just how things are in this part of the world. We keep regular hours, mostly during the day when the light is good. People just stop by when they have a free hour to practice.
